I know this firsthand. As the scapegoat in my family, I carried years of projection and attack from my narcissistic mother. When I left for college, she turned her wrath on my younger sister... the former golden child. Suddenly, she became the substitute scapegoat. She was hospitalized in the psych ward multiple times during her teen years because the spiritual and emotional weight was too heavy to carry.
